Department Profile
The present Physics department was originally started for the engineering college and with the moving out of engineering, the management was far sighted in starting the pre university science course and later the under graduate programmes in science in 1982 and Electronics in 1994.Initially, the department which catered to the engineering students continued to support the pre- university course too. The department was first headed by Prof. B A Krishna Swamy Rao, an eminent scientist in physics. He also had good command over languages like English, Kannada and Sanskrit etc. both spoken and written besides keen interest in sports, philosophy and literature. He was also the first principal of the college. It was only later Prof. Kappanna, a Gandhian and a good academician took over the responsibility of the department, who was also the Principal of the college. The combined Physics department which was training both engineering and pre-university students becomes separate around 1975. The physics department after this separation was headed by Prof. N Ramegowda, an highly dedicated and student friendly teacher. It was during his long tenure of over 30 years the department become popular and this helped in starting an under graduated programme in Physics and Electronics.Prof. N Ramegowda, Prof. B Sheela, Prof. M Thimmaiah, Prof G S Lingegowda and Prof. J Ravishankar was very much committed to the teaching, learning. Prof.N Ramegowda also became the principal and retired in 1998. Later, the rest of four eminent were retired in 2010 , 2012, 2018 and 2020 respectively.The department is presently headed by Prof. Ninganna, another efficient and bright academician.The department has a band of dedicated and experienced staff members like Dr J Mahadeva, and Prof Mahalakshmi,Mr.Sathisha S, Miss Nisarga K S, Mr.Pramod H M, Miss Poornashree M S and Mr.Arkesha M S are the pillars of the department. Dr J. Mahadeva who has done research in the liquid crystals, carried minor and major research projects and has published a number of research papers in national and international journals.The Staff members have upgraded their academic knowledge not only through refresher courses, orientation programme, but also through journals, books seminars and conferences.The department has a very well equipped laboratory with advanced equipments like optical benches, CRO, GM Counter, Function generators etc. The department also has highly dedicated and efficient teachnicians, whose role in the development of department is remarkable.
